Reconstructive Surgery

Breast Cancer Surgery & Breast Reconstruction

স্তন ক্যান্সার সার্জারি ও স্তন পুনর্গঠন

Breast cancer surgery and rebuilding of the breast — at the same time or later — with the patient’s own tissue or implants.

Medical review in progress — patient information, not a substitute for a consultation.

Overview

Breast reconstruction recreates the shape of the breast after mastectomy or partial removal. It can be done at the time of cancer surgery or months to years later, using flaps of the patient’s own tissue or implants. Reconstruction is a choice — some women prefer an external prosthesis — and does not interfere with cancer follow-up.

What it addresses

  • Loss of a breast after mastectomy
  • Asymmetry after breast-conserving surgery
  • Breast lumps requiring surgical removal

Who may be a candidate

  • Women planning breast cancer surgery
  • Survivors who have completed treatment and wish to discuss reconstruction

Treatment options

  1. 01Immediate reconstruction at the time of mastectomy
  2. 02Delayed reconstruction
  3. 03Own-tissue (flap) reconstruction
  4. 04Implant-based reconstruction
  5. 05Symmetry surgery on the other breast

Benefits & limitations

  • Restores breast shape and helps clothing fit
  • Reconstructed breasts usually have reduced sensation
  • More than one stage is often needed

Every patient is different. Results vary and no outcome can be guaranteed; your surgeon will discuss what is realistic for you.

Consultation & assessment

At Central Hospital, Dhanmondi, Dr. Masum takes a full history, examines the area of concern and — only with your permission — takes clinical photographs for your file. He explains which options suit you, including non-surgical ones where they are appropriate, together with the expected recovery, possible risks and the cost, so that you can decide without pressure.

Please bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and a list of the medicines you take.

Preparing for surgery

  1. 1Tell the surgeon about diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease and any allergies.
  2. 2Mention blood thinners, aspirin or herbal supplements — some may need to be paused only on medical advice.
  3. 3Stop smoking well before surgery; it slows wound healing.
  4. 4Follow the fasting and medicine instructions you are given for the day of surgery.
  5. 5Arrange for a family member to accompany you and help at home for the first days.

The procedure

The approach is planned with your cancer team, taking into account radiotherapy and other treatment. Flap reconstruction moves skin and fat with its blood supply to form a new breast; implant reconstruction may be done in stages.

Recovery & aftercare

Expect a hospital stay of a few days and several weeks before full activity. Drains and dressings are reviewed at follow-up.

Possible risks

  • Flap problems or implant complications such as capsular contracture
  • Asymmetry needing adjustment
  • Bleeding or a collection of blood under the skin (haematoma)
  • Infection
  • Delayed wound healing or wound breakdown
  • Scarring that is more noticeable than expected
  • Risks related to anaesthesia
