Medical review in progress — patient information, not a substitute for a consultation.
Overview
After pregnancy or major weight loss, the abdominal skin may hang and the muscles separate, so the tummy stays loose despite diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tightens the muscles, giving a flatter, firmer contour. It is not a treatment for obesity.
What it addresses
- Loose, hanging abdominal skin (pendulous abdomen)
- Separated abdominal muscles after pregnancy
- Stretch marks on the lower abdomen within the skin removed
- Loose skin after weight loss
Who may be a candidate
- Adults close to a stable, healthy weight
- Women who have completed their family
- Non-smokers in good general health
Treatment options
- 01Full abdominoplasty with muscle repair
- 02Mini abdominoplasty for the lower abdomen
- 03Body contouring of other areas after weight loss
Benefits & limitations
- A flatter, firmer abdomen and better-fitting clothes
- A long, low scar is permanent
- Future pregnancy or weight gain can change the result
Every patient is different. Results vary and no outcome can be guaranteed; your surgeon will discuss what is realistic for you.
Consultation & assessment
At Central Hospital, Dhanmondi, Dr. Masum takes a full history, examines the area of concern and — only with your permission — takes clinical photographs for your file. He explains which options suit you, including non-surgical ones where they are appropriate, together with the expected recovery, possible risks and the cost, so that you can decide without pressure.
Please bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and a list of the medicines you take.
Preparing for surgery
- 1Tell the surgeon about diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease and any allergies.
- 2Mention blood thinners, aspirin or herbal supplements — some may need to be paused only on medical advice.
- 3Stop smoking well before surgery; it slows wound healing.
- 4Follow the fasting and medicine instructions you are given for the day of surgery.
- 5Arrange for a family member to accompany you and help at home for the first days.
The procedure
Under general anaesthesia, an incision is made low across the abdomen (usually hidden by underwear). Excess skin and fat are removed, the muscles tightened and the navel repositioned.
Recovery & aftercare
Expect a hospital stay of one to three days, a compression garment for several weeks and walking slightly bent at first. Most return to office work in two to three weeks.
Possible risks
- Fluid collection (seroma)
- Blood clots in the legs
- Wound-edge healing problems, especially in smokers
- Bleeding or a collection of blood under the skin (haematoma)
- Infection
- Delayed wound healing or wound breakdown
- Scarring that is more noticeable than expected
- Risks related to anaesthesia
Questions about this treatment
No. It removes loose skin and tightens muscles; it works best when you are already near your ideal weight.
